ABSTRACT

The efficacy and safety of Mirazid in treatment of human hymenolepiosis were carried out in a rural village in Talkha Center [Dakahlia G.]. Kato thick smear stool examination showed 51 cases of Hymenolepis nana [9 of them had concomitant parasitosis], two cases of H. diminuta. Mirazid was given in a dose of 10 mg/kg/d for nine consecutive days an hour before breakfast for hymenolepiosis cases, as capsule for adults and suppository for children. All cases were subjected to history taking before treatment and six weeks post-treatment and stool examination was repeated as well weekly for six weeks post-treatment. There was overt clinical improvement. Side effects were negligible. Parasitologic cure rate was 40/41 or 95.2% for H. nana one week post-treatment, and 100% for H. diminuta one week post-treatment, up to six weeks follow-up for all treated patients. Two unresponded H. nana patients were cured by another Mirazid course

ABSTRACT

The encysted metacercariae [EMC] of heterophyids in the fish species; Mugil caphalus, M. capito, M. auratus, Oreochromis, n.niloticus [=Tilapia nilotica], and Tilapia zillii trapped brackish and fresh water fishes were isolated by the artificial digestion method and identified. The EMC by morphometric analysis proved to be seven phenotypical distinct types. Cross-matched seven groups of clean laboratory bred puppies each was experimentally infected with a distinct EMC type. The recovered adult flukes were compatible to seven species of six genera of family Heterophyidae. These were Heterophyes heterophyes, H. aequalis, Pygidiopsis genata, Haplorchis yokogawai, Prohemostomum vivax, Phagicola sp. and Stictodora sp. The EMC of the seven heterophyids were recovered from all the brackish water fishes, M. caphalus, M. capito, M. auratus, O. niloticus and T. zillii. On the other hand, the EMC of P. genata, Haplorchis yokogawai and Phagicola sp. were recovered only from the fresh water fish, O. niloticus and T. zillii. All the EMC was re-described and photographed

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on 70 Albino rats classified into 3 groups. Group I, of 10 rats [control], Group II, of 30 rats infected with T. spiralis, Group III, of 30 rats, infected with T. spiralis and immunosuppressed with dexamethasone. Rats were sacrificed on the 8th,15th and 21th days postinfection. At each day of sacrification, histological examination, adult worms count, goblet cells and mucosal mast cells count were done. The results showed that in GII there were shortening of villi, prominent lengthening of the crypts, high significant increase of goblet cells and mucosal mast cells numbers during worms expulsion and most of adult worms were expelled at 15th day post infection. GIII, showed marked atrophy of the villi and crypts, high significant decrease of goblet cells and mucosal mast cells numbers and significant delay of adult worms expulsion. The authors concluded that goblet cells and mucosal mast cells play an important role in T. spiralis expulsion and immunosuppression led to dalay expulsion of T. spiralis

ABSTRACT

Schistosoma mansoni glutathione S-transferase [SmGST] and Fasciola gigantica glutathione S-transferase [FgGST] were purified from adult worms homogenate by affinity chromatography. An assessment of both SmGST and FgGST as candidate vaccines was done by comparing vaccinated guinea pigs groups challenged with F. gigantica metacercariae with the control group in terms of worm load, pathological changes in liver tissue and the survival rate of the animals. A decrease in mortality rate was best reported with FgGST 15 ug dose, while no significant decrease in worm load was reported with any vaccination. The pathological changes in liver tissue of vaccinated and non- vaccinated animals were similar

ABSTRACT

Serum samples of fifteen women with abortion [sporadic or repeated] were serologically examined for Toxoplasma antibodies [IgM and IgG] using the microparticle enzyme immunoassay [MEIA]. A histopathological study of the obtained placentas was also done. It was found that all cases were negative for Toxoplasma IgM, while five cases were positive for Toxoplasma IgG. The histopathological findings of examined placentas showed villitis and calcifications in 20% of Toxoplasma IgG positive cases. Hydropic degeneration was also observed in 100% and 70% of Toxoplasma IgG positive and negative cases, respectively. The difference between the two groups was statistically insignificant

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the sera of fifteen Strongyloidiasis patients, twenty-five cases with other helminthic infections and five cases free from parasitic infections [control]. Enzyme immunoblot transfer assay [EIBT] was used to assess IgG response against the different fractions of Strongyloides stercoralis filariform larval crude soluble antigen separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis [SDS-PAGE]. In the immunoblot, all sera of 15 strongyloidiasis patients disclosed IgG antibodies reactivity against immunogenic bands having molecular weights. Five immunodominant antigenic bands of 66, 50, 41, 38 and 31 KDa were commonly recognized by the strongyloidiasis sera IgG suggesting that these antigenic components may be suitable for specific immunodiagnosis of human strongyloidiasis
